Bardejov is a town that’s most precious feature is the cultural heritage created in the Medieval period. The town has more than 760 years’ old history and thanks to its historical sights it was placed on the World Heritage List of UNESCO. The first written mention dates back as far as 1241.  The town was sited at an important crossroads on the old trading routes, and for this reason it benefitted from the favor of the old Hungarian monarchs, especially in the form of important rights and privileges.  In 1352 King Ludovicus I ordered the town to be fortified and granted a privilege to organize 8-day fair and the guarantee of freedom for all who took part in it. The most important privilege of all was granted in 1376; the Bardejov became a FreeRoyalTown and in 15^th century a stock right was granted to the town.  In this flourishing time period the most important were guilds and crafts as well as the trade. In the town there were more than 51 guilds and crafts working, but also the education and culture was very important too. In the successive centuries as a result of numerous wars and natural catastrophes Bardejov became small town of province. In 1950 it was declared as protected city core.
